Calif. tight end commits to ASU

Tight end Chris Coyle committed to Arizona State on Saturday. He is ASU's second commitment this month and seventh overall for the class of 2009 that will sign in February.

Coyle, 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, of Oaks Christian in Westlake Village, Calif., visited ASU when the spring game was played on April 19 and said the Sun Devils have been the leader for his services since. His other scholarship offers included UCLA, Washington, Washington State, Boise State, Air Force and Utah.

"My goal has been to get to Arizona State," Coyle said. "It's a combination of the coaching and the fact they've been pretty successful lately. The coaches told me about the different tight ends they've coached. When I was there, I saw photos of tight ends all over the place," including All-Americans Zach Miller and Todd Heap.

Coyle also plays defensive end at Oaks Christian, a private school whose football roster this fall will include the sons of Joe Montana and Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky competing at quarterback, and actor Will Smith's son at wide receiver.

ASU senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter is from Westlake, Calif., and attended Newbury Park and Westlake high schools.
