ASU's Lawrence Guy and family help feed the less-fortunate for Thanksgiving
Arizona State's Lawrence Guy went grocery shopping this week. For Thanksgiving.
For the past five years, the junior defensive tackle and his family have bought Thanksgiving dinner for less-fortunate families. Previously, they had given away meals only in Guy's home town of Las Vegas, but this year's generosity extends to the Valley, as well as Fort Worth, Texas, where Guy's older brother, Dell, ran track at Texas Christian.
"We just want to give back," Guy said. "Just helping one person out is a great thing to do. It just feels good inside. Everyone should have a Thanksgiving."
According Guy's father, Michael, everyone in his family helped pay for the meals.
"It's hard to see kids and families around the holidays, and they just don't have it," Michael Guy said. "You don't ask for their story. You don't wonder if someone is an alcoholic. You don't wonder, 'Do they deserve this?' You just give. There are no strings attached."
After purchasing enough food (turkey, stuffing and potatoes) for five families, Lawrence Guy gave the meals to Larry Pettiford, associate pastor at Church of the Good Samaritan in Phoenix. The church, which has a program to provide meals to needy families, distributed them.
It offers Guy - who has 34 tackles, including four for loss - a nice mental break from football, but he has work left on the field. The Sun Devils have two games remaining, starting with Friday's home contest against UCLA. Rival Arizona awaits next week.
"I think we're going to finish strong," Guy said.
Honoring the best
Former ASU coach Frank Kush and eight former standout players will be recognized at halftime of Friday's game. The nine men represent the initial inductees of the Arizona State Football Ring of Honor.
The inductees: Kush, running back Wilford "Whizzer" White, running back Bobby Mulgado, linebacker Ron Pritchard, quarterback Danny White, defensive back Mike Haynes, receiver John Jefferson, lineman Randall McDaniel and the late Pat Tillman, a defensive back.
Fans can meet the honorees 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sun Devil Tailgate inside Wells Fargo Arena.
