There's a link near the top on the left to a rap song with Smith and his good friend, Arizona State quarterback Samson Szakacsy. (Caution: It's not 100% work friendly.)
Obviously, he has ASU on his list of possible transfer locations. As close as he is with Szakacsy, ASU makes some sense. But I get the feeling there's more to this for him than just a close friend he can make some music with. Darren Thomas, Jeremiah Masoli, Coach Helfrich and some others at other schools might have greater pull. Time will tell.
In an unrelated story but as a bit of proof about how CU is getting close to turning the corner, they just landed Tony Clemons. Clemons you'll remember was a pretty highly rated receiver, recruited a bit by the Ducks and CU before he chose Michigan a couple years ago. Clemons will now transfer to Colorado. Hawkins needs to keep guys healthy, and he obviously needs to keep them on campus. They don't have the depth Oregon does. Thus, the reason they've granted him a release, but want him to think about it before he leaves and have granted him permission to talk to maybe the one Pac 10 school that wouldn't offer him immediately.
With that said, here's a piece by Neill Woelk of the Daily Camera in Boulder. Can't agree with it at all. Especially the part about, "They invested a lot in his education and they're not going to reward him for changing his mind."
Really? Because they'll him go to USC right? So, as long as they know he can't get a scholarship, they're willing to reward him for changing his mind? The more I think about it, I understand them trying to slow him down a bit, (especially after the Celotto saga), but to me Woelk is just being a homer here.
You either let him transfer or you don't. Woelk can't hide behind that argument for CU if the AD will give him a school to transfer to. He can't. (IMHO of course.) I know CU's playing by the rules. But if they don't let him choose from more than one Pac 10 school they're really being childish in my opinion.
And as for Woelk's contention that they gave him a scholarship when plenty of other schools wouldn't? That's garbage. He had over a dozen choices. Then he says, "They gave him a starting spot...blah blah."
More garbage. He earned that spot. Nobody just handed it to him.
What about the fans he drew to Folsom Field? And trust me, he drew plenty of them. Thousands probably because honestly, he might've been the only thing worth watching two years ago. His punt returns were electrifying an led directly to a huge win over Oklahoma the same day Oregon lost to Cal at the goal line.
Funny, I don't think fans thought they were paying for an 'investment' when he was running down the field through tacklers. He was game ready when he got to Boulder.
Point is: both sides have benefited. Plenty. Point is, either let him transfer or don't. The more I hear about other programs hiding behind rules to keep players at their schools, the more I like Chip Kelly.
