Quarterback Brock Osweiler, center Garth Gerhart and linebacker Colin Parker are Arizona State's football captains, chosen by player vote.
Cornerback Omar Bolden and T.J. Simpson, out perhaps for the season with injuries, also will be captains, coach Dennis Erickson said Tuesday.
Osweiler is a junior beginning his first season as a full-time starter. Gerhart is a senior who started every game last season and 22 in his career.
Parker is a senior who made the first five starts of his career last season. He is competing to start this season in place of injured Brandon Magee.
"He's fought through knee injuries, he's fought through position switches, he's fought through not playing and always hung in there," Erickson said of Parker. "Last year, he played extremely well and he deserve it. Right now he's our leader on defense."
ASU's scout team made its debut at practice Tuesday as the Sun Devils began more detailed preparation for their Sept. 1 season opener against UC Davis.
"The biggest thing now is our scout team has got to learn how to practice," Erickson said. "They've got to spend time looking at film of the opponents so they line up correctly and are in the right place and that they know the blocking schemes so we get the best look we can get. It's really underrated."
